How To: Use Our Content Mapping Scratch Pad

Step 1

Start by heading over to our resource shop and downloading your own copy of our FREE Content Mapping Scratch Pad.

Next, we suggest printing out the scratch pad or opening it on your device as an editable PDF file.

Step 2

Before you start filling out your Scratch Pad, you’ll need:

  • 7 (suggested) different shades of writing colours

    • We suggest purchasing a great set of colour varied pens or ultra fine tip markers.

To begin:

  1. Fill out the month and year that this content will be intended for

  2. Jot down your key focuses you’d like to hit for that month. This can include sales goals, new features, anything you’d like to make sure to mention.

Step 3

Next, add your overview titles for topic categories for the month.

These can be anything from extremely specific (“New Cinnamon Soap”), to vague (“About Our Business”) - It’s totally up to you how you want to name these! These categories are meant to help you organize your content into pillars to you can be sure not to miss anything or repeat content too close together.

Step 4

Now, it’s time to scratch in some content ideas!

Remember to keep these short, as it’s only the inspiration so you can clear your head and drop your ideas on the paper to organize your thoughts and not forget important pushes for the month ahead.

Remember to add any notes to the side column that you don’t want to forget, such as links, event signup information, tasks that need to be completed to implement this content, etc.

Step 5

Colour in the category boxes with a different shade for each box.

Try not to use similar shades to make it easier to glance at the paper quickly and recognize a content category with ease - this will greatly speed up the process in the long run!

Once you are finished this step, go through each category and label them as follows:

  • E - These are EMOTION based posts

  • F - These are FACT based or informational posts

To get the most out of engagement and follower retention, it helps to intersperse these posts in order to create a “pull in” through your content.

Label the calendar page with the month, year, platform and date numbers as it applies to the scratch pad you just filled in.

Now it’s time to MAP out your content.

Alternate between informational posts and posts of a more personal note that emphasis the culture and atmosphere of your company.

This creates a PUSH/PULL effect balancing out your audiences patterns and behaviours to take advantage of reach.
